Goodguys ups the ante in California

Dec. 4, 2002

Goodguys Tires & Auto Repair has purchased the Winston Tire Co. store in Clovis, Calif., for an undisclosed amount.

The nine-store retail chain also is building a 10-bay outlet in Clovis. Vice President Scott Shubin says he expects his 10th retail store to be completed by Feb. 1 (Goodguys also has a wholesale distribution center).

Construction on Goodguys Tires' 11th store, which will be located in Fresno, Calif., will begin in the fall of 2003, "maybe sooner," says Shubin, whose father, Pete, founded the company in 1976. In semi-retirement, Pete is still the company's president.

"Going back about five years, we had 10 stores and sold four to America's Tire," says Scott. "We saw there was still a definite need for growth in our market, the Fresno metropolitan area.

"We picked some locations where we didn't have redundancy with our existing locations, Clovis being one of them. Clovis is a growing suburb, and we felt there was the need for at least two locations in that city."

"This is what's on our plate right now. We have plans over the next three to five years to add in the neighborhood of four to five stores," he adds.

Goodguys markets Goodyear, Continental, General, Eldorado and Hankook tires.
