Ohio dealers fight disposal fee hike

May 4, 2005

Ohio tire dealers aren't taking state legislators' plans to hike tire disposal fees from $1 to $2 per tire lying down.

The Ohio House of Representatives recently approved the increase 54-45 "and now the Senate is holding hearings," says Gordon Gough, executive director of the Ohio Tire Dealers & Retreaders Association (OTDRA).

The fee, which was originally designed to further scrap tire research, will now be used to fund the Ohio Department of Natural Resources' Litter and Recycling Program, according to Gough.

OTDRA officials -- plus representatives from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. and the Rubber Manufacturers Association -- are scheduled to meet with Ohio Senator Kevin Coughlin to protest the increase this Friday.
