Federal-Mogul Corp. is renewing its efforts to fight the proliferation of counterfeit auto parts, a problem that costs the global automotive industry some $12 billion each year, say Federal-Mogul officials.
"Federal-Mogul supports legislation introduced recently in Washington to strengthen the United States criminal statute against production and trafficking of counterfeit goods."
Company officials claim counterfeit auto parts have an adverse affect on motorists thanks to "increased safety concernes and warranty and insurance claims from faulty and non-compliant parts. In addition, many documented vehicle crashes have been caused by counterfeit parts -- such as counterfeit brake pads and brake shoe linings -- that fail to due poor construction."
"Strong civil and criminal enforcement action will be pursued against identified countefeiters," says Scott Emmer, Federal-Mogul's brand protection manager.
