NHTSA releases latest tire study statistics

Nov. 30, 2001

Nine percent of passenger cars on United States roads are running on at least one bald tire, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported in a study released earlier today.

Another recent NHTSA study reveals that 14% of gas stations in the U.S. are not equipped with air pumps or have malfunctioning air pumps.

And only 49% of gas stations that offer air provide tire pressure gauges.

NHTSA, in conjunction with the Tire Association of North America and the International Tire & Rubber Association, launched a tire safety campaign today.

As part of the program, more than 5,000 flyers will be distributed at tire dealerships, and public service announcements will air on some 2,000 radio stations throughout the country.
