Direct Tire goes green with Eco Tire Tote

Feb. 18, 2010

Four of Direct Tire & Auto Service’s Boston, Mass., locations initiated an Eco Tire Tote pilot program last fall, and wound up saving 10,000 plastic bags from ending up in landfills, the company says.

Direct Tire offered the low-cost, reusable Eco Tire Tote bags to their customers in place of the normal free disposable plastic tire bags.

“It is often difficult to show your environmental dedication in this business,” says Barry Steinberg, president of Direct Tire & Auto Service. “The Eco Tire Tote allows Direct Tire & Auto Service to point to the tangible action that we are taking to help the environment. This was an unexpected and easy way for us to communicate this message and my customers loved the Eco Tire Tote for making their tire swap process that much easier."

The totes accommodate all passenger tire sizes from 22 to 31 inches in diameter. They also can be branded with the retailer or manufacturer’s logo for maximum impact with the consumer over the lifespan of the product, the company notes.

Each Eco Tire Tote saves around 20 large plastic bags from entering landfills. In North America there are an estimated 100 million plastic tire bags entering landfills each year, which equates to about four million cubic feet of plastic bags.
