SmartWay approves four Yokohama truck tires

Feb. 16, 2010

Four more Yokohama medium truck tires have been added to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's SmartWay list. Yokohama Tire Corp. now has seven SmartWay-verified truck tires.

SmartWay, a collaboration between the EPA and the freight industry, is designed to improve energy efficiency and reduce pollution.

Yokohama tires that recently received SmartWay verification include the 101ZL steer tire, the 103ZR steer tire, the RY587 trailer tire, and the TY517MC2 drive tire.

"These tires meet the SmartWay program's stringent verified low rolling resistance criteria because they run cooler and help reduce fuel consumption, which cuts costs and benefits the environment," say Yokohama officials.

The 101ZL and 103ZR are part of Yokohama's environmentally friendly Zenvironment truck tire line. The RY587 "delivers a combination of long, even original tread mileage," according to Yokohama officials.

The TY517MC2 "delivers outstanding traction, long even wear and superior durability, while also providing excellent low rolling resistance."

"This recognition from the EPA SmartWay program is proof that our technologically advanced tires help save fuel and protect the environment," says Yokohama CEO and President Takao Oishi.

This is the second SmartWay recognition that Yokohama has received in just over a year. In January 2009, Yokohama's RY617 steer tire, 703ZL drive tire and RY587MC2 trailer tires became the company's first SmartWay-approved products.

Yokohama also was named a partner in SmartWay last year, "with status in the 'shippers' category, meaning the company ships more than 50% of its products on SmartWay-designated transport carriers."

According to the EPA, Yokohama's freight efforts "will contribute to the goal of eliminating 33 million to 66 million metric tons of carbon dioxide and up to 200,000 tons of nitrogen oxide per yea by 2012."
