Right around the corner: tire labeling law

Jan. 24, 2010

The consumer tire labeling law is close to reality. Dan King, vice president of sales and marketing for Yokohama Tire Corp., says the cost to tire manufacturers will be enormous.

In his latest B.O.B. blog, Modern Tire Dealer Editor Bob Ulrich looks at the law from the manufacturer's perspective (for a look at how it will affect tire dealers, see "NHTSA proposal 'labels' the tire industry").

King estimates the testing involved in meeting the new government standard -- when it is finalized -- will cost tiremakers between $50 million and $60 million in the first year. As you might expect, the effect on them is even greater than that.
