Titan, Steelworkers to continue talks

Aug. 6, 2001

Titan Tire Corp. officials will resume negotiations with the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) on Wednesday, Aug. 8, in an attempt to settle the three-year-old steelworkers strike at Titan's Des Moines, Iowa, plant.

"The USWA remains committed to negotiating an overall settlement, including a back to work agreement that provides for the return of (Des Moines) Local 164 members to their jobs at the facility and other critical matters," say USWA officials.

Last week, Titan announced both parties had reached a "tentative agreement of the terms and conditions of a five-plus-year contract."

A USWA spokesperson replied that no settlement had been reached due to "several outstanding issues."

"It is in everyone's best interest to conclude this matter," Titan President and CEO Morry Taylor said in a company statement several days ago.
