Strike at Titan's Des Moines plant may be nearing end

Aug. 2, 2001

Titan Tire Corp. says it has reached a "tentative agreement on the terms and conditions of a five-plus-year contract" with the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) at its Des Moines, Iowa, factory.

Workers there have been on strike since May 1998.

"No settlement has been reached at this time," says a USWA spokesman. "There are several outstanding issues. We're in extremely serious negotiations."

"It is in everyone's best interest to conclude this matter," says Titan President and CEO Morry Taylor. "I remain cautiously optimistic."

Both Titan and the USWA declined to reveal further details.
