Tire Repair Legend Bill Johnson Dies
Bill Johnson, one of the industry's foremost experts on tire repair and longtime Technical Rubber Co. employee, died on March 29 at the age of 68.
Born in Columbus, Ohio, to parents John and Sharon Johnson, Bill joined Technical Rubber in 1976. "None of us could have known how profoundly his influence would shape our company and the tire industry for decades to come," said Technical Rubber Chairman and CEO Dan Layne in a letter to Technical Rubber's employees.
"After learning nearly every aspect of production" at the company's headquarters in Johnstown, Ohio, Bill moved into a technical sales leadership position, "where he truly thrived. It was in front of industry peers and end users that Bill shared deep technical insight, knowledge and practical experience to improve products. From advising on the efficient use of massive mining tires to long-haul over-the-road applications, Bill had a rare ability to not only see what needed improvement but to design processes and support systems needed to make those improvements work together.
"Bill's influence extended globally, helping lift Technical Rubber Co. operations in Europe, Japan and China," said Layne, "through leadership roles in manufacturing and distribution. Bill's dedication to the industry provided professional instruction to tens of thousands of tire technicians and his contributions to product design continue to set Tech tire repair solutions apart today."
Bill retired as Technical Rubber Co.'s vice president of technology in 2023 and stayed closely connected to his former colleagues.
"Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bill quietly gave of his time and energy to others in the community, supporting his church and other charitable causes."
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ruth Ann; children, Bill (Michelle) Johnson and Megan (Dom) Cervi; four grandchildren; a sister; two sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law; and many relatives and friends. He was preceded by his brother, John D. Johnson, and his sister, Debby Homan.
A funeral service will take place on April 10 at Jersey Baptist Church; 13260 Morse Rd.
