When to Replace Tractor Tires: Indicators of Tire Wear

Good tire maintenance is as important as equipment maintenance. In addition to checking air pressure regularly, dealers should also inspect tire wear periodically.

"In fact, when tread depth falls to about 20% of its original depth, it may be time for replacement," notes Dave Paulk, manager, field technical services, BKT USA Inc.

"Among the main problems of a worn-out tread are excessive slippage, increased fuel consumption and longer time in the field. Moreover, excessive slippage can cause the tires to turn faster than the tractor’s field speed and the tread isn’t deep enough to allow the tire to grip the ground as it should. Slippage should be in the 8% to 15% range.

"It’s also important to consider soil types and moisture levels, which all play a role in determining when tires should be replaced," says Paulk.
