A recent straw poll confirms MTD's longstanding “70/30 Rule,” which states that 70% of consumers have no tire brand preference and retailers recommend and sell them a brand.
The rule also states that 30% of consumers say they have a brand preference, but 50% of these consumers buy a different brand at the recommendation of the retailer.
When asked “What happens most often when a retail customer comes in for new tires?” 73% of respondents to MTD’s straw poll said that “the customer does not specify a brand” and they offered choices.
Nineteen percent of respondents said, “The customer requests a specific brand, but buys another brand” based on the retailer’s recommendation.
Eight percent of respondents said the customer “requests a specific brand and buys that brand.”
