Vredestein Banden B.V.'s Enschede plant in the Netherlands is free of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), as are the tires manufactured at the factory, the company reports.
In addition, all tires sourced by Vredestein, which is owned by Apollo Tyres Ltd., also will be PAH-free before Jan. 1, 2010.
PAHs are organic compounds that have the potential to be carcinogenic. They develop as the result of imcomplete combustion or carbonization of materials containing carbon.
"The production of tires requires extender oils and although PAHs are not deliberately added to such oil, they can be present and therefore end up in tires," say Vredestein officials.
