First solo title at Manx GP for Avon Xtremes after strong Classic TT performance

Sept. 17, 2015

Avon Tyres is no stranger to the top step of the podium at the Classic TT and the Sidecar TT races. But the firm is celebrating the first win for its Xtreme supersport tyres in the 2015 Manx GP Supertwin class.

Wigan rider 28-year-old Rob Hodson led the four-lap race from the start, on his JGH Racing Kawasaki ER-6f, shod with Avon's Xtreme tyres. The Xtremes are Avon's road-legal race tyre, designed for ultimate grip and performance, and they proved their worth on the demanding Isle of Man Mountain course.

Amazingly, Rob set a new lap record of 114.55mph on his opening lap, from a standing start. He also beat the overall race record, finishing the 150-mile race in just over an hour and 20 minutes, for an average race speed of 113.057mph.

Avon's Motorsports Motorcycle Manager Steve Smith said, "The victory in the Supertwin race yesterday was a great way to finish a successful fortnight for Avon Tyres. This was the first win for both Rob and the Avon Xtremes on the mountain course; the first of many for rider and tyres. Congratulations to all involved."

Away from the Supertwins victory, Avon's Xtreme tyres also earned a third place in the Lightweight class, with Alex Sinclair on his CSC Racing Yamaha. Avon riders could have done even better: Nick Anderson and Dave Taylor both had to retire while in leading positions.

Avon also managed total domination at the Classic TT once more, taking the top three podium places in both the 350 and 500 classes.

TT stars Dean Harrison, Ian Lougher and Lee Johnston took the first, second and third respectively in the 500 race whilst Michael Rutter won the 350 race after a battle with Dan Cooper who unfortunately retired on the last lap. John McGuinness and Ryan Farquhar had been flying in practice with 110mph+ laps but both retired on the first lap of the race. The modern riders are amazed at the amount of grip available straight away from the Avon AM22 and AM26 race tyres and without the need for tyre warmers.

There was no rest for the Avon Motorsport team as they headed directly to the Goodwood Revival (11-13 September) to look after the tyre needs of the two-wheeled racers including Troy Corser, Freddie Spencer, Kevin Schwantz and the ITV4 pairing of Steve Plater and James Whitham.
