Late Sunday evening, Michelin North America Inc. and the United Steelworkers mutally agreed to a second extension of the current contract.

The parties will continue to negotiate after mutually agreeing to a 48-hour extension, which will end at midnight on July 25. The original contract was set to expire at midnight on July 22, but was extended 24 hours.

The current contract covers BFGoodrich Tire Manufacturing facilities in Tuscaloosa and Opelika, Ala., and Fort Wayne, Ind. The three consumer tire plants have the capacity to produce 73,000 tires a day, according to Modern Tire Dealer's 2006 Facts Issue.
