Goodyear comments on Hangzhou situation

July 6, 2007

Though it sources tires from Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Co. Ltd., Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. says it never purchased product made at the Hangzhou plant that built the light truck tires under recall.

A Goodyear spokesman told that Hangzhou manufactures some unidentified passenger and light tires for the Akron, Ohio-based tiremaker, though "not Goodyear or Dunlop."

Tires manufactured for Goodyear by Hangzhou "are produced to Goodyear performance and quality standards."

The factory that manufactures those tires "had to pass a strict qualification process."

On July 2, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) sent a letter to 14 companies, including Goodyear, that the agency believes "may have imported tires of similar construction" from Hangzhou.

The letter was sent "to request information and to remind (companies) of your responsibilities to report any tires that contain a defect related to motor vehicle safety and thus are subject to notification and remedy requirements," according to NHTSA.
