Aug. 24, 2007

Sullivan Tire Co. has acquired Meriden, Conn.-based Berlin Bandag Inc. for an undisclosed sum. The deal includes Berlin Bandag's retread plant, plus four commercial tire centers.

Berlin Bandag's plant in Meriden can produce 132 medium truck and light truck tires per day at full capacity, according to Rick Polito, operations manager for Sullivan Tire's commercial department. "It's running about 100 units a day."

Three of Berlin Bandag's commercial centers are located in Connecticut, while its fourth is located in Massachusetts.

The acquisition brings the total number of Sullivan Tire's commercial tire locations to 15 and the total number of its retread plants to three.

Bob Berlin, Berlin Bandag's former owner, says he will work for Sullivan Tire, but has not revealed in what capacity. He bought the operation from Bob Malerba, owner of Malerba's Silver City Tire Co. Inc., in 2004.
