Foreign Tire Sales Inc. (FTS) says more than 4,500 of the 250,000 allegedly defective, Chinese-manufactured light truck tires it's recalling have been recovered.
The Union, N.J.-based importer has been recalling the tires since early August.
The tires in question were produced by Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Co. Ltd. between early-2004 and early-2006. They were sold under the Westlake, YKS and Compass labels.
FTS says the tires are defective because they don't contain a rubber gum strip. Hangzhou maintains the tires are fine.
A spokesman for FTS says the recall will continue "at least" through October. (In late August, FTS told moderntiredealer.com that the recall would end on Oct. 25.)
