Scott Speed Continues Hunt for Red Bull Global Rallycross Championship
The Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross team fought their way through a challenging double-header at the Port of Los Angeles. A victory on day one and the debut of the 544 hp GRC Beetle made for an exciting weekend.
Scott Speed, driver of the No. 77 7UP Volkswagen, was unbeatable on Saturday. After winning his qualifying rounds, Speed took first in the final, giving him his third victory of the Red Bull Global Rallycross Championship season.
“Everyone on the Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross team has done an amazing job this year. We have taken cars that have struggled and made them consistent winners and the fastest cars in the field.” said Speed. “Looking forward to Seattle, we’ll make the changes we need to the 7UP Volkswagen and come out strong to recover some points.”
While engine trouble hampered Tanner Foust’s podium ambitions, he did take the checkered flag in the Last Chance Qualifier on Saturday and remains excited to be moving forward with the GRC Beetle.
“We gained a lot of on-track testing time in the new Rockstar Energy Drink Volkswagen Beetle and posted some of the fastest times,” said Foust, driver of the No. 34 Rockstar Energy Drink Volkswagen. “Unfortunately, a precautionary engine change kept us out of the finals, but I’m looking forward to racing at DirtFish Rally School next weekend in Seattle.”
On Sunday, Speed won his heat before experiencing engine trouble in the semi-finals and finishing sixth in the final. With the weekend’s result, Speed sits firmly in third position of the overall standings.
The next round of the championship is Red Bull Global Rallycross Seattle. The penultimate race of the season takes place on September 26 and 27. NBC will air the race on Sunday, September 28 at 4:30 p.m. ET.
