The Michelin Green X Challenge competition ends at Petit Le Mans

A record crowd that included officials from the U.S. Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency provided an ideal setting in the rolling, red clay hills of Northern Georgia as a pair of Cellulosic E85R fueled cars scored victories in America’s premier environmental motorsports competition, the Michelin Green X Challenge.

The race was the first in which all five energy and fuels permitted in ALMS competition (GTL-diesel, E85R; E10; Isobutanol, and hybrid electric) were on track together in competition.

The Hilliard, Ohio-based BMW Rahal Letterman Racing team captured GT category honors and became the 12th different car from 10 teams and seven manufacturers to claim a Michelin Green X Challenge victory in 2010 ALMS competition.

Meanwhile, the Gloucestershire U.K/Bozeman, Mon. based Drayson Racing Lola Judd scored its third Michelin Green X Challenge Prototype victory of the season.

The big winners of the day however were the Danbury, Conn. based Highcroft HPD that claimed the year-long Michelin Green X Challenge Prototype honors and the Sonoma, Calif.-based Flying Lizard Porsche team that successfully defended its  Michelin Green X Challenge GT championship.

“We are very proud to win the 2010 Michelin Green X Challenge championship,” said Highcroft team owner Duncan Dayton.  “The ALMS has become a spot for rapid prototyping of technologies that can help the world. Hats off to the ALMS, and EPA, the DOE and the Michelin Green X Challenge. It’s only going to get more exciting as we bring in more and more technologies to make cars better.”
