Bridgestone, Continental to jointly develop commercial TPMS

Sept. 22, 2004

Bridgestone Corp. and Continental AG have agreed to join forces in developing an advanced tire pressure monitoring system for commercial vehicles.

The companies plan to start mass-producing the system in 2007 and hope to position it as a global standard.

The technology contains a battery-free sensor that would be installed on a tire´s inside surface instead of on the wheel. The sensor will detect air pressure and temperature "and it will contain a readable and writable identification tag," according to Bridgestone Americas Holding Inc.

Bridgestone and Continental also will develop "peripheral technologies" that will let drivers and techs monitor the sensor´s readings.

Bridgestone will exhibit the system at this year´s Tokyo Motor Show.
