Michelin North America (MNA) Inc. is phasing out steel tire cord and bead production at its Sandy Springs, S.C., plant, which will close in early 2004.
The phase-out will take place over the next two years, say MNA officials.
The operation "is being closed because it is not cost-competitive."
The company plans to consolidate "much" of its production at other steel processing facilities.
MNA's Sandy Springs tire and cord plant employs nearly 300 people. The factory's 730-employee rubber processing operation will not be impacted by the closing, according to MNA officials.
Earlier this week, MNA announced the closing of its automated C3M plant in Reno, Nev.
