NHTSA declares Firestone Steeltex tires free from defects

April 15, 2002

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has closed its defect investigation into Brigestone/Firestone Americas Holding Co.'s (BFAH) Firestone Steeltex R4S, R4S II and A/T tires that started September 2000.

"We're pleased that NHTSA has closed its evaluation," said BFAH in a press release.

The Steeltex tires -- usually shod on vans, pick-up trucks and SUVs -- came under fire after BFAH (then Bridgestone/Firestone Inc.) announced its 6.5-million-unit recall of Firestone Wilderness AT, ATX and ATX II tires in August 2000.

Last month, NHTSA closed its investigation of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. Load Range E light truck tires while declaring them defect-free.

In February, the agency ended its seven-month investigation of General Ameri*550 AS tires made by Continental Tire North America Inc.
