NTSB safety symposium opens

Speakers presented the basics of tire construction, engineering and failure at this morning’s session of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Tire Safety Symposium in Washington, D.C.

The two-day symposium began Dec. 9. This morning's panelists also discussed the federal government crash-related data collection and analysis capabilities and the use of statistics in setting public policy.

The topics covered in the morning session were: “Tire Disablement and Vehicle Dynamics” and “Identifying and Analyzing Tire Disablement-Related Crashes”.

The symposium will resume at 1:30 p.m. today. The topics and speakers for this afternoon’s panels are:

* Tire Registration and Recall with Jack Chern of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Kevin Rohlwing of the Tire Industry Association and Tracey Norberg of the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA); and

* Tire Aging and Service Life with George Soodoo of NHTSA, Sean Kane of Safety Research and Strategies Inc. and Dan Zielinski of the RMA.

On Dec. 10, the program will begin at 9 a.m. Panels will cover “Advances in Tire Technology” and “Tire Maintenance and Consumer Awareness.”
