Retreading has begun to pick up, and independent retreaders throughout the country are responding by making major investments in their operations.

A number of retreaders have told www.moderntiredealer.com that they are adding building machines. They include Royal Tire Inc. in St. Cloud, Minn.; Looney's Tire Service in Little Rock, Ark.; Maine Commercial Tire in Hermon, Maine; Becker Tire & Treading Inc. in Great Bend, Kan.; and Holyoke Tire & Auto Service Inc. in West Springfield, Mass.

Other retreaders who have added or plan to add machinery include:

* Terry-Haggerty Tire Co. Inc. of Albany, N.Y., which plans to add a builder before the end of the year.

* Eastern Iowa Tire Inc. of Davenport, Iowa, which has added a shearography machine at one of its two plants.
