July 4th Car Traffic Expected to Surpass 2019 Levels

June 28, 2022

AAA says car travel volume over the Independence Day holiday weekend will break previous records — despite high fuel prices.

An estimated 42 million people will travel by car for the holiday. That would put more people on the road this year than before the pandemic. In 2019 road travelers totaled 41.5 million.

AAA says recent issues with air travel cancellations and delays show that the share of people flying over the holiday will be the lowest since 2011.

AAA predicts 47.9 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home over the holiday weekend (June 30 - July 4) — an increase of 3.7% over 2021 travel volumes.

Those total figures are approaching pre-pandemic numbers. In 2019, 49 million people traveled.
