The days of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.’s Wingfoot logo appearing on Cleveland Cavaliers jerseys are numbered. The tiremaker's logo will be replaced next season.
On March 29, Cleveland-Cliffs Inc., a producer of flat-rolled steel with its headquarters in Cleveland, announced its logo would begin gracing the NBA team’s jerseys in the 2022-2023 season. The steelmaker’s logo will replace Goodyear’s Wingfoot.
It ends a five-year run for Goodyear. The company’s logo was added to the Cavs’ uniforms for the 2017-2018 season, just after the team won its first NBA championship in 2016.
Neither Goodyear nor the Cavaliers revealed the price of what was labeled a “multi-year sponsorship agreement,” — but www.cleveland.com reported it was a deal worth more than $10 million a year. At the time, it was one of the most lucrative jersey sponsorships in the NBA.
Zack Yohman, director of business and strategic communications for the Cavaliers, told Modern Tire Dealer that the team doesn’t reveal financial details of such agreements. He also declined to say whether Goodyear sought to continue to extend its jersey sponsorship.
“We’ve enjoyed five great years of having the Wingfoot on our jerseys…. Our long-standing relationship with Goodyear will continue via other elements.”
A Goodyear spokesperson tells MTD it hasn't discussed pursuing another NBA team and that the tiremaker looks forward "to continuing our ongoing relationship in other capacities."
