Tires Plus recently celebrated its 50th anniversary with a “Wheels & Reels” community event near the Minneapolis-area communities where the automotive service chain was founded.

More than 225 people attended the July 25 event at the Elko Speedway & Drive-in Theater in Elko New Market, Minn.

The 1970s-themed celebration included live music, a classic car show, snacks, beverages and a screening of the movie “Grease” on the venue’s drive-in screen.

Tires Plus officials say the theme recognized the company’s founding in 1976. Tom Gegax and Donald Gullet, two former Shell Oil Co. colleagues, launched Tires Plus with three former Shell service stations in the Burnsville, Minn., area.

Bridgestone Retail Operations acquired Tires Plus in 2001. The chain now has more than 375 stores in over 20 states.

The anniversary event was free to attend and was open to the first 500 vehicles. Attendees also received commemorative items and a $100 gift card that could be applied toward automotive services at Tires Plus locations.

Company officials described the event as a thank-you to the region where Tires Plus began operating five decades ago.

The classic car display and other activities highlighted the company’s connection to automotive culture, while the drive-in movie provided a family-oriented conclusion to the evening.

Tires Plus is part of Bridgestone Retail Operations, which operates automotive service locations throughout the United States. Tires Plus stores provide tire installation, maintenance and other vehicle services.

The company marked its anniversary as it continues to serve customers in communities across the country while recognizing its roots in Minnesota.
