When National Tire Safety Week returns May 20-27, consumers will be prompted to "know your roll" and perform basic tire maintenance.
Promoted by the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA), tire safety week also will focus on another tire topic in 2019 — unsafe used tires.
“We are urging motorists, including first-time drivers, to “Know Your Roll” before taking to the roads this Memorial Day and in advance of the busy summer travel season,’ says Anne Forristall Luke, CEO and president of USTMA. “Just like fastening your seatbelt — an action that’s become synonymous with safety, proper tire care and maintenance also need to be top of mind when it comes to ensuring the safety of all motorists on the road."
USTMA says it will highlight used tires, as well as basic monthly tire maintenance, during the week.
"While new tires must meet stringent federal safety standards to be sold in the U.S., worn tires can be resold as used with virtually no restrictions in most states," the USTMA says.
As for maintenance, USTMA recommends drivers check their tire pressure monthly, and regularly check their tire tread depth and ensure their tires are rotated and properly aligned.
