SEMA Show, Day Three: Tread depth scanner wins award

Nov. 7, 2014

Tire Profiles Inc.’s Groove Glove, a handheld laser measurement system for determining tread depth, won the tools and equipment product category of the New Products Showcase Awards at the 2014 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas.

The company says the Groove Glove allows technicians to quickly scan a vehicle’s tires anywhere in a service facility. The product’s lasers measure over 400 points across the tire.

The system then uses Tire Profiles’ cloud-based software to compute the tread wear, calculate the tread depth and determine if the wear indicates an alignment is needed.

All that’s needed is a wireless signal. The company says within seconds, a report is created and becomes a tool to engage the consumer and dramatically increase tire and alignment sales.

In addition to being durable, lightweight, and portable, the Groove Glove features an integrated touch screen display, a bar code scanner for vehicle ID, and a camera for license plate recognition. It also uses an onboard gyroscope and accelerometer for accurate measurement, according to the company.

Nearly 2,000 products were entered into 16 different categories to be considered for the SEMA New Product Awards this year.
