Nokian Tyres plc and UPM, a biomaterials production expert, announced a partnership by introducing the first concept tire made with UPM BioMotion RFF material.
The Nokian concept tire, Green Step Ligna, is made with the innovative material, UPM BioMotion RFF, which is a recyclable material and has the potential to replace a “significant part of the carbon black currently used in tire production,” according to Nokian officials.
The UPM BioMotion RFF is a lignin-based alternative to traditional carbon black reducing the need for fossil materials.
“Our partnership with Nokian Tyres marks the exciting entry of our Renewable Functional Fillers into the global tire markets,” says Michael Duetsch, vice president of Biochemicals at UPM.
The first Nokian Tyres concept tire containing UPM BioMotion RFF will be exhibited at the German rubber industry conference DKT 2024 in Nürnberg, Germany, from July 1–4.
