The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) has launched National Tire Safety Week 2025, running from June 30 to July 4, with the theme “Check Your Tires. Protect What Matters.”
National Tire Safety Week is an annual public education campaign designed to raise awareness about the critical role of tire care in driver safety.
This year's theme urges drivers to take proactive steps such as checking tire pressure, tread depth, alignment and rotation, to remain safe on the road.
“Tires are the only part of a vehicle that touches the road, and their condition plays a critical role in keeping everyone safe, from drivers and passengers to pedestrians,” says Anne Forristall Luke, president and CEO of USTMA.
“National Tire Safety Week is a powerful reminder that proper tire care isn’t optional; it’s essential. Our member companies are committed to advancing tire technology with a strong focus on safety, innovation and sustainability.”
USTMA surveyed 2,000 U.S. drivers ages 16 and older who provided the following insights about tire safety awareness, according to USTMA officials:
- 46% of U.S. drivers surveyed correctly identified the driver’s side door or the vehicle manual as the proper location for the recommended tire pressure.
- 45% of drivers do not know the correct location to check for the recommended tire pressure of their vehicle measured in pounds per square inch.
- 21.1% of respondents believe tire pressure should be checked weekly and 19.4% say monthly, more than 10% say it should be checked only before long trips or - never.
- About 1 in 6 drivers remain unaware that tires have built-in tread wear indicators.
- Young drivers aged 16-24 are less aware than older drivers that tread wear indicators exist in every tire. The survey showed that 21% of drivers in this age group are unaware of these bars in the tread’s groove.
- U.S. tire manufacturers recommend that drivers check their tire pressure at least once per month, monitor tread depth and ensure regular tire rotation and alignment.
“Tire conditions directly affect safety, handling and performance for every vehicle and motorist on the road,” says Dick Gust, CEO at the Tire Industry Association.
“When drivers understand the value of routine maintenance, including pressure checks, alignment, rotation and tread inspections, they help protect lives. National Tire Safety Week is an important reminder to act on these simple steps.”
