Goodyear to Close Fayetteville Plant
Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. is in talks with the United Steelworkers to close its consumer tire plant in Fayetteville, N.C.
The Akron, Ohio-based tiremaker intends to shutter the factory, which opened in 1969, by the end of 2027.
"The tire industry is changing fast and Goodyear must change with it," says a Goodyear spokesperson. "We are committed to U.S. manufacturing in today’s evolving market.
"After extensive efforts to make the Fayetteville facility competitive, Goodyear is in discussions with the United Steelworkers to close the facility by the end of 2027. This difficult action is necessary to strengthen Goodyear’s ability to compete in today’s marketplace and support the long‑term health of the business."
According to MTD's 2026 Facts Issue, the Fayetteville factory has the capacity to build 31,000 passenger tires and 10,500 light truck tires per day.
In terms of daily production capacity, it's Goodyear's third largest plant in North America, behind the firm's Lawton, Okla., factory, which has the capacity to produce 65,400 units and the former Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. plant in Tupelo, Miss., which can make around 42,000 passenger tires a day when running at full throttle.
