Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9 Is 'Best of What's New' Award Winner

Oct. 19, 2017

Popular Science has named the Hakkapeliitta 9 — the flagship winter tire by Nokian Tyres Inc. — a winner of the 2017 Best of What’s New Award. The tire is one of 100 top products in 11 categories. Popular Science says recipients of the award "must have a product or technology representing a significant step forward in its category."

Nokian is among the 10 winners in the automotive category; no other tire company earned an award.

“The Best of What’s New awards honor the innovations that shape the future,” says Joe Brown, editor-in-chief of Popular Science. “From life-saving technology to incredible space engineering to gadgets that are just breath-takingly cool, this is the best of what’s new.”

The magazine highlighted the Hakkapeliitta's new adaptive stud technology, which the tire company says ensures the vehicle behaves in severe weather. The tire also has a new tread pattern which offers stable bare-road handling; comfortable, silent riding and improved fuel economy.

“Our teams worked tirelessly to produce such a safe and comfortable winter tire, leveraging 80 years and millions miles driven on Hakkapeliittas,” says Tommi Heinonen, head of Nokian Tyres in North America. “We are humbled and honored that the Nokian Hakkapelliita 9 has received the Popular Science Best of What’s New Award.”

Winners will be featured in the November/December special issue which hit newsstands Oct. 17.
