Annual tire production in India is expected to double to 160 million units by 2012, according to Dr. R. Mukhopadhyay, director of research and development for J.K. Industries Ltd., an Indian tiremaker.
"Indian tire industry growth is closely related to growth in the automobile market."
Production of cars in India will increase by 7.8% by 2014, he says.
Nearly one million small cars are sold in India each year, comprising 70% of the country's total car sales.
Exports of Indian tires are expected to increase, too. "It's been proven that any tire that's successful in India can be successful anywhere in the world."
