Dec. 9, 2009

Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations LLC's (BATO) Aiken County, S.C., plant has won the "Spare the Air" award from the State of South Carolina's Department of Health and Environmental Control.

"Environmental stewardship and a strong commitment to the community are major initiatives of our facility and our company," says John Stewart, the plant's manager.

"Some of the plant's innovations include the use of cementless technology known as Innovative Tire Building Technology, which results in about 60% fewer volatile organic compounds," according to BATO officials.

"The plant also is home to an array of other environmentally friendly features and initiatives that include hydrogen-powered forklifts that generate zero emissions, bio-diesel-powered maintenance equipment and 33,000 recently planted longleaf pine seedlings."
