Recalled Michelin tires 'meet performance criteria'

Jan. 30, 2009

The 597 Michelin Pilot Alpin PA2 ZP tires that Michelin North America Inc. is recalling "meet all performance criteria," says Francois Jacquin, passenger and light truck replacement tire quality director for the company.

The size 225/50R17 94H tires are being recalled because they were built without the required letters "D.O.T." on the sidewall. "This issue has been corrected and consumers who purchased the affected tires will receive new tires that have the required letters free of charge."

The D.O.T. marking is used to help consumers identify a tire's "validity for use" and also signifies compliance with motor vehicle safety standards.

"There is no performance issue with these tires and they have been validated to meet all performance requirements."

The recall only applies to tires containing D.O.T. TIN identification code "6U0A 5JEX" and TIN date codes between 3806 and 2308.

Michelin says it's communicating with tire dealers and has set up at phone number (800-847-3435) for consumers.
