Two Nokian Winter Tires Will Bear New Ice Grip Symbol

Oct. 12, 2022

This winter Nokian Tyres plc will produce two winter tires with a new ice grip symbol indicating the tires have been subjected to testing on icy surfaces and met the standards of the  International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

The symbol will be found on the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10 and R5 passenger, SUV and EV tires. Consumers in North America may start seeing the symbol on their tires’ sidewalls as soon as this winter.

To be eligible for the ice grip marking, the tires’ ice performance was verified through an internationally agreed-upon ice braking test by an accredited independent test laboratory. Tires had to perform at least 18% better than a standard reference tire to receive the symbol.

“The new ice grip symbol provides drivers with more evidence that our winter tires offer legendary peace of mind in the toughest winter conditions,” says Nokian Tyres Director of Products Steve Bourassa. “As the inventor of the winter tire, we work hard to lead the market in winter innovation so we can continue to keep drivers safe.”

The newest of Nokian's winter tires, the Hakkapeliitta R5, makes its debut this season. It fits passenger vehicles, light trucks, SUVs and electric vehicles. The tire features a new rubber compound designed to improve comfort and efficiency, while its double block grip design is made for wintry surfaces.

The Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10 premiered last season and is a studded winter tire option.
