FIA reverses stance on Michelin teams

July 18, 2005

After weeks of rhetoric, the Federation Internationale De L'Automobile (FIA) has canceled disciplinary proceedings against several racing teams that pulled out of last month's United States Grand Prix.

The teams did not race in the June 19 Formula One event due to safety concerns about their Michelin brand tires.

FIA officials say they are "satisfied that the teams were contractually bound to follow the instructions of their tire supplier and that their tire supplier had expressly prohibited them from racing at the Indianaplis Motor Speedway in its licensed configuration."

The FIA found the teams "guilty" on June 29. Michelin North America Inc. is offering refunds to the event's ticketholders.
