With 775 retail stores throughout the United States, Discount Tire Co. Inc. tops this year's MTD 100, the industry's most comprehensive list of independent tire dealer chains.
"We're planning on reaching 800 (stores) by the end of the year," Gary Van Brunt, Discount Tire's vice chairman, recently told MTD Editor Bob Ulrich.
The MTD 100 determines the largest domestic independent tire store chains by counting retail, commercial and combination retail/commercial outlets. It also lists total number of wholesale outlets for each dealership, tire brands carried and more!
Number two on the MTD 100 is Tire Kingdom Inc., headquartered in Juno Beach, Fla., which has 735 stores. Bend, Ore.-based Les Schwab Tire Centers came in at number three with 353 total outlets, all of them combination retail/commercial stores.
Rochester, N.Y.-based Monro Muffler Brake Inc. took fourth place with 264 stores, having increased its store count by a whopping 110 shops over the last 12 months. Bound Brook, N.J.-based retailer Somerset Tire Service Inc. took fifth place with 115 outlets.
