Either type may be available depending on make and model.

The particulate cabin filter features a multi-layer design with pleats that provide more surface area to filter out pollutants and irritants. Other elements include foam perimeter gaskets and an injection-molded frame when specified by the vehicle's manufacturer, which provide a solid fit to prevent contaminants from getting into the cabin.

"Cabin air filters play a significant role in helping us breathe clean, healthy air while we drive, whether we suffer from asthma and allergies or not," says Chuck Kerrigan, director of marketing for Purolator Filters NA LLC. Purolator manufactures and supplies premium quality BreatheEasy cabin air filters for most domestic and imported vehicles in the North American automotive aftermarket. According to Kerrigan, a cabin air filter's non-woven, uniquely engineered media traps and retains even the finest particles of dust, dirt and pollen.

The activated charcoal cabin filter goes a step further. It absorbs most toxic and foul-smelling gases such as ozone, nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide and hydrocarbons, keeping odors out of the cabin. The additional cover layer makes for extra protection.

Cabin air filters are usually inexpensive and easy to replace.  For best results, Kerrigan suggests they be replaced once a year or 12,000-18,000 miles.

Usually found under the dash, behind the glove box, or in the air box in the engine compartment, cabin air filters can be installed in anywhere from less than 10 minutes to about an hour, depending on the location. Most Purolator BreatheEasy cabin air filters come with an illustrated, vehicle-specific instruction sheet to assist with installation.

Refer to the owner's manual to see if a vehicle has one, or visit the Application Guide on Purolator's Web site at www.purolatorautofilters.net  to find a vehicle's BreatheEasy cabin filter.
