Savvy/Currie take class in Norra Mexican 1000

May 23, 2014

Falken Tire, continuing its aggressive participation in – and support of – multiple off-road racing series and events, scored first in its class and 14th overall in partnership with Team Savvy/Currie, at the historic NORRA Mexican 1000 race in Baja, CA.  The team ran Falken’s WildPeak MT off-road tire throughout the event.

The desert race is a timed rally taking place over four days – this year running May 10-14, closely mimicking the original NORRA 1000 Rally which occurred in 1967.  The original rally evolved into the Baja 1000 race.  The current event starts in Ensenada and then crisscrosses its way down the Baja Peninsula, ending at San Jose del Cabo.

A total of 176 vehicles participated in the event, running in distinct classes, from motorcycles and vintage single-seat buggies to modern trophy trucks.  Team Savvy/Currie, running in the Ultra 4x4 Class, took first with Car 4588.  Another competitor, Fox Shocks Chassis Car 4701, also running Falken WildPeak MT tires, took third in the same class and 25th overall.

Driving with a broken thumb, John Currie was pleased with his hard-earned result and full of compliments for Falken’s WildPeak:  “It was a challenging race.  Over four days, we overcame the engine getting hot, fuel problems, transmission leaks, and a bad crash with the car flipping end over end.  But through it all, the Falken WildPeak MTs performed flawlessly.  We ran over 1,300 miles and not one flat.  The tires did so well, we pulled at least five other vehicles out of some deep silt beds.  Our vehicle went through those same beds with zero problems.”

Zero, in fact, seemed to be the common theme, as none of the other five Falken-shod Ultra4 chassis had any flats during the course of the competition.

Falken Tire continues to surmount the challenges that off-road racing brings and successfully brings its teams home in top positions.  The Falken WildPeak MT and its sister tire, the All-Terrain, consistently earn rave reviews from teams, due to their strength and durability in such demanding conditions.  Falken will continue to use off-road racing to validate its superior high performance capabilities off pavement, and as a proving ground to test and evaluate WildPeak’s reliability and toughness.
