Online tire sales: to tax or not to tax

May 8, 2014

If you have a brick-and-mortar store, and you sell tires in any of the 45 states that charge sales tax, you have to charge sales tax.

Internet tire providers, however, do not. Does that give them an unfair advantage?

The United States Senate thinks so. It passed a bill last year giving states additional rights when it comes to charging sales tax on purchases online.

Where does the bill stand? And what do your tire dealers think about it?

Modern Tire Dealer Editor Bob Ulrich talked with independent tire dealers and wholesale distributors in New Jersey and New York recently, and got an earful on the topic. To find out what was said, check out his latest blog, "Online sales taxes: The 'loophole' may soon be closed."

The New Jersey tire dealers wholeheartedly support taxing online tire sales. What are your thoughts, especially if you sell tires predominently online? Read the blog, then let us know what you think by leaving a comment!
