Former MTD Editor Lloyd Stoyer Dies

Lloyd Stoyer, editor of Modern Tire Dealer from 1986 through 2000 and Tire Industry Hall of Fame member, recently died at age 91.

Stoyer, who was born near Youngstown, Ohio, enjoyed a long, distinguished career in journalism, working for the Akron (Ohio) Beacon Journal for 15 years, the Lapeer County Press in Michigan and other publications. During his career, he also held a variety of public relations positions, most notably at Republic Steel.

He also served in the United States Army's Counter Intelligence Corps during the Korean War, stationed in Japan.

Stoyer joined MTD at a pivotal time in its history, according to MTD Publisher Greg Smith.

“At heart, Lloyd was a reporter’s reporter and had sources everywhere,” he says. “He was extremely respected by both independent tire dealers and tire company executives, and used his influential voice to champion the interests of our readers. He was tough but fair, and was unafraid to take positions that he believed were important. His dedication and work further cemented MTD’s position as the tire industry’s leading publication.”

Shortly before retiring in 2000, Stoyer was inducted into the Tire Industry Hall of Fame.

Preceded by his wife of 60 years, Faye, in 2012, he is survived by their children, Jerry Stoyer of Sachse, Texas, and Judy Stoecklin and her partner, Stuart McDonald, of Sanbornton, N.H.; his brother, Lyn Stoyer, and his wife, Dorothy; and his grandsons, Spencer and Seth Stoyer.
