Dec. 26, 2002

A sell-out crowd will view the inaugural Continental Tire Bowl, sponsored by Continental Tire North America Inc.

The game pits West Virginia against Virginia at Ericsson Stadium in Charlotte, N.C., on Saturday, Dec. 28. It will begin at 11 a.m., and will be televised live on ESPN2.

West Virginia, 9-3 overall, finished second to Miami (Fla.) in the Big East Standings with a 6-1 record. Virginia, 8-5 overall, finished in a tie for second place in the ACC, one game behind Florida State.

Total ticket sales numbered 73,258. "The support from both the schools and the Charlotte community has been exceptional," says Ken Haines, the bowl game's executive director. "We estimate that Virginia has sold over 20,000 tickets and West Virginia has sold over 30,000 tickets."

Continental is the bowl game's title sponsor. The tire company also helps sponsor the Carolina Panthers NFL team, which also plays its home games in Ericsson Stadium.
