Lawrence Adams, president of Sterling Transportation Services in Blair, Neb., won the “Guess the Pressure” contest at the recent Technology & Maintenance Council's (TMC) Transportation Technology Exhibition.
The contest was put on by the Tire Retread & Repair Information Bureau (TRIB) and the Tire Industry Association (TIA). Using only a "thumper,” Adams had the closest guess for the inflation of the three retreaded tires on display, managing to get within 20 psi of the correct inflation.
For his efforts, Adams won a TIA Fleet Tire Service OSHA compliance training program worth $300. Every contestant received a free air gauge and a reminder that the only accurate way to check pressure is with a properly calibrated air gauge, note the associations.
"Contestants' guesses were all over the place, with many being as far off as 30 psi per tire,” says TRIB Managing Director David Stevens. “But, Lawrence clearly has a gift when it comes to checking tire pressure, and TRIB congratulates him on being the closest to the mark.”
"Improper air pressure is a major contributor to shortened tire life, and it can have dire safety consequences,” says TIA Executive Vice President Roy Littlefield. “Thus, it's important that the 'gospel' of correct tire pressure be spread as wide as possible. That's why we're glad to be partnering with TRIB to share this important message in such a fun way."
