Can truck tires handle increased highway speeds?

April 10, 2015

Fourteen states have increased their highway speed limits above 65 mph. Texas leads them all with an 85 mph limit in parts of the state. Can truck tires handle the extra speed?

Jim Park, equipment editor for our sister publication Heavy Duty Trucking, wrote an article in response to the recent Associated Press story titled “Big Rigs Often Go Faster than Tires Can Handle.”

In “Too Fast for Your Tires?” Park looks at the AP story published in March that suggests truckers run their vehicles at speeds above which the tires are rated. Click here to read his in-depth article.

MTD Editor Bob Ulrich also wrote a blog on the subject, see “What were they thinking? Tires get no respect from lawmakers.”
