South Carolinians generate about 12,600 waste tires per day, and the state says without proper management the 4.6 million tires generated annually pose a potential health and environmental risk.
That's why three state agencies have launched an awareness campaign designed to encourage residents to report any illegal tire dumping: See It, Report It.
In 1991 the state banned the disposal of whole tires in landfills and began imposing a $2 fee on new tire purchases. The fee is used to manage and recycle waste tires, reduce illegal dumping and encourage new uses for old tires.
The See It, Report It campaign is supported by a trio of state agencies: the state Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), Palmetto Pride and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. The DHEC also has developed a three-year sustainability plan.
