The Tire Industry Association (TIA) is exploring how it is going to meet the need for a passenger and light truck tire educational program that pertains to used tires.
In Modern Tire Dealer's August issue, Dick Gust, chairman of TIA's Tire & Rubber Recycling Advisory Council (TRRAC), revealed that his committee is looking into the matter. Although Gust said TIA hoped to have a used passenger and light truck tire certification program in place by Sept. 1, 2007, the existence and implementation of such a program is premature.
According to TIA Executive Vice President Roy Littlefield, Gust's committee and its Used Tire Task Force have yet to make any recommendations concerning used tires to the board of directors, the first step in any action plan undertaken by the association.
Several proposals are on the table, among them the certification program described in the MTD article. Littlefield says that after the board has discussed the merits of each approach, TIA will release a statement regarding how it's going to proceed with educational programs related to used tires.
"There is no timetable on this," he adds.
TRACC members are scheduled to meet again on Sept. 13.
