Dealer comment: 'A waste of time and money'

March 9, 2007

Steve Maddox is an independent tire dealer. He also is opinionated, and knows how to not only make a point, but also communicate it to anyone who will listen.

We at Modern Tire Dealer know his fellow tire dealers will listen. So starting in our March issue, Maddox will relay his "Dealer Viewpoint" to our readers on a regular basis.

In March, he weighs in on the contract between the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. and the United Steelworkers of America (USW) from the point of view of the tire dealer.

"A closer look at the issues from a dealer's perspective reveals that Goodyear won virtually every round of this fight even with one hand figuratively tied behind its back thanks to the more USW-friendly contract that its rivals at Michelin North America Inc. negotiated -- quickly, I might add -- earlier in 2006."

Maddox says he thinks Michelin gave into the USW "just to make life much more difficult for its larger rivals when it was their turn at the plate."

As you can read, Maddox doesn't pull any punches.
